It looks like the 5-year-old hole in the ground where Filene’s used to sit in Downtown Crossing is finally going to be filled. Last night, in a much anticipated vote, the Boston Redevelopment Authority (BRA) approved the proposed Millennium Tower and Burnham Building. The 1.2M square-foot project includes housing, office space, retail space, restaurant space, and a health club. The proponent, Millenium Partners, plans to renovate the Burnham Building (the building that housed Filene’s) and develop a mixed-use residential tower rising up to 625 feet. The project is planned to include: 600 condominium and rental units; 122,000 to 231,000 square feet of retail; 125,000 to 218,000 square feet of office space; a 35,000 square-foot health club; a 10,000 square-foot restaurant; and 550 parking spaces. It’s not an exaggeration to say that this project has been one of Boston’s most eagerly anticipated projects in recent history. Construction is expected to start sometime next year.
